Product development incorporates advertising
and marketing strategies to promote the name and the
capabilities of the goods being sold. Much the same as company
development, a market image has to be created so that consumers
have an idea of what they are buying.
The first step is to promote the product name so that consumers
can identify it, ‘people buy what they know.’ In addition a
customer can not buy what they don’t know exists. With clever
marketing techniques, individuals learn to trust your products,
much in the same way as if they heard praise via word of mouth.
Next step is to advertises the characteristics that make your
product superior to those of your competitors, ‘what special
features does it have’, ‘what does it do better’, ‘what free
stuff can I get,’ etc. All these give consumers the reasons they
require to choose your product over others.
Both steps are achieved using the same mediums. One of the most
important being the packaging where easily recognisable and eye
catching designs can make each and every item its own little
advert, continuing to sell itself long after it has been bought,
thus enticing customers to repurchase such items in the future.
Other mediums include TV, radio, magazine and newspaper
advertisements, through to posters, flyers and internet
advertising. All of which can incorporate the packaged item thus
furthering consumer awareness.
